Sallie Martin

Sallie Martin was born near the turn of the century in Pittfield, Georgia. By the early 1920′s, Sallie had relocated to the Chicagoland area with her husband, Wallace. She became affiliated with Thomas A. Dorsey, first as a member of his singing group in 1932. She encouraged Mr. Dorsey to recognize the marketability of his music and proceeded to organize, deomstrate and sell the “Dorsey Sound” to churches and Gospel Choruses for approximately the next ten years. The Martin/Dorsey collaboration has resulted in: the joint sponsorship of talented singers such as Roberta Martin and Mahalia Jackson, and the formation of the National Convention of Gospel Choirs & Choruses. During the 1940′s, Sallie toured as a solo Gospel Artist. She formed with jazz pianist/Gospel composer, Kenneth Morris, Martin/Morris Publishing, which published “Just A Closer Walk With Thee”, “Dig A Little Deeper: and many others. Sallie Martin retired from active singing in 1970, the recipient of dozens of awards, citations, and an honorary doctorate degree. She has exerted wide influence on Gospel music developments through her performances, original songs, and her students.
